As with the Criterion cover for Lars von Trier’s Europa, I’ve never particularly liked the Criterion Collection cover for Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious, which has always seemed to me like a fast and cheap Photoshop job. Inspired by the art of Egon Schiele, which fits perfectly with Hitchcock’s eroticism and his expressionist influences, I made this— a remix of the Criterion cover art that I feel is more artful and romantic. Since I don’t particularly like the Criterion Collection cover art for Lars von Trier’s Europa, I decided I had to do my own take on it. I ended up recreating the film’s typography— which I recently released as a TrueType font— and took one of my favourite visual compositions from the film (the Werwolf sequence) as reference to create this Fake Criterion. So there!
